Sunoco had a mandate to leverage digital technology and capabilities and deliver differentiated value to both customers and dealers. The objectives ahead of us were to conceive, design, develop, and operationalize a digital program and platform that empowered the company to establish a more personalized relationship with its customers, and to deliver a set of high value services to its network of dealers. Sunoco also knew that, to keep up with an ever changing competitive marketplace, it needed the solution to deliver on the promise of mobile payments – at the pump and in store – and to digitize its grocery rewards program. Sunoco sought and found in Stuzo a trusted partner to deliver on its business mandate.

Digital Storefront Manager

A Web Portal to Empower Dealers to Manage Their Digital Storefront Data and Customize Backcourt Offers

As Sunoco dealers operate a variety of different branded backcourts – from QSRs to bait and tackle shops, auto service stations and more – Sunoco required a platform to empower their backcourt operators with capabilities to connect with customers through the Sunoco app on a localized, personalized level.

The Digital Storefront Manager enables Sunoco dealers to manage their digital store identity and create their own backcourt offers to drive traffic from the forecourt into the backcourt for a lift in foot traffic and revenue.

Product Strategy and Design

Stuzo uncovered Sunoco’s business requirements by first conducting a product ideation and feature prioritization workshop. With the business requirements identified, the Stuzo product team followed our Digital Product Innovation 3xD process to lay out the user experience (UX). Stuzo then conducted user testing on clickable prototypes, and integrated user feedback into the final UX and user interface (UI) design.


Mobile Application Development for iOS and Android

Built with security and speed at their core, the iOS and Android apps are written in native Objective-C, Swift and Java technologies. Through the apps’ digital wallet interfaces (integrated with First Data Corporation’s Universal Commerce platform), users can pay for merchandise and fuel with their phones through a number of payment methods, including Apple Pay, Android Pay, credit card and Sunoco’s private label credit card issued through Citibank. And with integration to Sunoco’s grocery loyalty programs, Sunoco can immediately reference app users’ prior purchase history and offer delivery via the app.


A New Digital Platform to Power Today’s Mobile Apps and Tomorrow’s Emerging Technologies

Stuzo architected a new digital platform to power Sunoco’s mobile applications for Sunoco’s multiple fuel and convenience store brands. Built on Stuzo’s digital product reference architecture, the platform is the middleware layer that connects the Stuzo-built iOS and Android apps to Loyalty, Payment, Offers, CRM and other services.

At the core of the platform is a Digital Product Administration System and Management Dashboard where Sunoco’s innovation team and business analysts can view real-time metrics on app usage and KPIs, and add time and geo-targeted promotions and marketing messaging into the mobile apps.

Today, mobile apps are the main channel for the platform, but because of its flexible nature, Sunoco is equipped to engage their customers in emerging technology channels such as Conversational UI (Amazon Alexa, Facebook Messenger), Connected Cars, VR or IOT when the time is right.
